Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand welcomed the opportunity to comment on proposed changes to the Early Learning Licensing Criteria from the Ministry of Regulation. While we support efforts to simplify regulations, we’ve stressed the need for clear, co-designed guidance that works across diverse settings. Effective regulation should be collaborative, not top-down, built on trust, strong partnerships, and practical tools that support tamariki wellbeing, safety, and learning.

Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand supports a consistent national framework for teacher induction, provided it is flexible, well-funded, and developed with Māori and Pacific educators. Our submission highlights the need for practical tools, cultural responsiveness, and proper support for mentors. With the right backing, this framework could be a real step forward.
