Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand is calling on the Government to make the Waitangi Tribunal’s findings on the national curriculum an immediate priority.
The Tribunal found that the Crown breached Treaty principles, including partnership, active protection, equity, and good government when developing the new curriculum. It also raised concerns about less focus on te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and mātauranga Māori.
Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand believes education in Aotearoa should reflect our unique bicultural foundations and honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi. A curriculum that recognises the identity, language, and culture of tamariki can strengthen relationships and help achieve fair learning outcomes.
We ask the Government to work closely with Māori and the education sector to restart the curriculum process in a meaningful way.
