Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand and Te Rito Maioha are raising serious concerns about new Government advice prioritising cost-cutting over quality in early childhood education.

The Government has approved measures that allow ECE employers to pay new teachers at the minimum rate, regardless of their qualifications, threatening the recruitment and retention of quality kaiako. The move also signals a retreat from pay parity, undermining fairness and the professional status of ECE teachers. These changes risk deepening inequities, weakening the workforce, and compromising learning outcomes for tamariki.
