Coaching and Mentoring to Support Implementation of the Teaching Councils Professional Growth Cycle for Leaders

As leaders in the education sector we have a responsibility to our tamariki/rangatahi to balance accountability with team member’s growth and development. In environments that are constantly shifting and unpredictable we need leaders, and aspiring leaders, who are able to look after their own well-being, as well as have the skills and tools for creating a coaching and mentoring culture that enhances outcomes for all.

These workshops are designed to support all current leaders to learn the tools and skills to create and foster a culture of mentoring and coaching within and outside of their setting.

In environments that are constantly shifting and unpredictable we need leaders, and aspiring leaders, who are able to look after their own well-being, as well as have the skills and tools for creating a coaching and mentoring culture that enhances outcomes for all. 

Michela Homer has designed these three workshops and two peer coaching sessions aligned to the Leadership Capability Framework from Teaching Council and Montessori pedagogy. The workshops will provide concepts and learning for transforming the work of guiding, managing and leading adults for solving challenges in complex times and will be a mixture of theory and discussions, with the peer coaching sessions allowing participants the opportunity to put theory to practice.

Workshop Topics and Outline
Workshop one: Developing the potential in others: Meaningful coaching and mentoring others through active listening. 

Being an effective coach and mentor requires leaders to have certain skills in order to grow others. In a climate where we’re striving to build leadership capability and a sustainable workforce, this is critical. In this session, we’ll explore some coaching and mentoring tips and frameworks as well as develop understanding of active listening as a way to really ‘hear’ and develop others.

Workshop two: Emotional Intelligence: 
Understanding your own emotional intelligence and the impact that this has on you and others, is critical in leadership. In this session, we’ll review the components of EQ and also discuss strategies on how to truly understand and improve your own so that you can be a better leader.

Workshop three: Resolving issues and conflict: Root cause analysis.
Having those ‘challenging’ conversations to support change. 

We often hear that this is the ‘biggest’ challenge of many leaders or aspiring leaders. How do you hold someone to account whilst maintaining the relationship? In this session, we’ll support you to develop a framework and skills for doing this effectively in a way that builds capability and capacity as well as giving you ways to ‘stop the noise’ and dig into the root causes that may be driving the conflicts.

Peer Coaching: Week commencing 15 August, 2022, we’ll pair up members to set up and plan their peer coaching and mentoring session with each other. (30mins-1hr)

Session 2: Wednesday 24 August, 2022

Peer Coaching: Week commencing 29 August, 2022, we’ll pair up members to set up and plan their peer coaching and mentoring session with each other. (30mins-1hr)

Session 3: Wednesday 7 September, 2022

Time: 6:30-8:30pm

 

Facilitator

Michela Homer was elected to MANZ Council in 2013 and was re-elected in 2015. She is currently a Regional Manager in the Lower North Island for Provincial Education. Michela believes that the work we do must be grounded in effective, meaningful relationships. It never ceases to amaze her how when we work collaboratively, we can make a real difference for tamariki and their families. She is motivated and inspired to work alongside her teams and MANZ to lift and improve outcomes for children, parents and teachers and to provide the best that we possibly can. She completed her Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) 3-6 diploma in London in 1994 and has worked in a variety of ECE and Montessori centres in Aotearoa.

If your service or school is not a school member of MANZ, you have the option to join MANZ as an individual member for $66 pa and then register at the individual member rate. Becoming a MANZ Student Member
If you are currently studying you have the option to join MANZ as a student member for $40 pa and then register for at the rate offered to teachers at MANZ member schools. MANZ may ask for proof of current student identification.
