Discover how polyvagal theory can help you recognise children’s different emotional states, support their wellbeing, and nurture deep concentration. Linked to sensory processing, we can identify the vagal states that indicate positive engagement, as well as when tamariki (and kaiako!) might need more support and strategies to co-regulate. Tie in Montessori observation by recording polyvagal states for the tamariki in your classrooms with simple checklists.
Considering Dr Montessori’s plea for us to work on the spiritual preparation of the teacher, connect to your own vagal state through personal reflection, helping to support classroom action—supporting our tamariki through calm, connected, Montessori-inspired approaches. By using compassion and brain science we can develop safer, more responsive emotional classroom environments together!
