News about Montessori spread quickly and visitors came from all over the world came to see the Montessori children's houses. By 1913 there were 100 Montessori schools in the USA. This rapid spread of Montessori has resulted in the name Montessori being unprotected by copyright. Montessori can be used for any purpose by anyone.

There is no Montessori franchise in New Zealand. Montessori early childhood centres and schools are independent businesses, privately owned or run by community or parent groups.
What does membership of Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand mean?
Membership of the Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand signifies a Montessori centre or school's committment to professional excellence and to promoting Montessori in New Zealand. Membership of MANZ is voluntary and schools are not assessed by the association. Member schools financially support the work of the Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand and are active participants in Montessori professional events, the Montessori community and in the growth of Montessori education throughout New Zealand. Families who attend Montessori centres and schools that belong to MANZ receive a quarterly magazine, Montessori Voices.
MANZ has begun work on the Montessori Journey to Excellence Te ara ki huhuatanga; with a pilot programme running from 2013-14. Only centres and schools that belong to MANZ will be participate in the piloting of the Montessori Journey to Excellence, which aims to give a framework for continuous improvement of Montessori early childhood centres and schools in New Zealand.
