The Primary Aged Child through a Montessori Lens

Do you wonder what goes on in that Montessori unit at your school or the Montessori primary school down the road? Have you ever wondered about some of the terms you hear used to describe what happens in a Montessori primary class? Have you ever felt that you wanted to understand your child more as they transitioned from preschool to primary class and beyond? If you have answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions then this is a course for you.
Date: Wednesday 12 May, 19 May, 26 May and 2 June 2021
Location: Online via Zoom at your place, Aotearoa New Zealand and international

These workshops are suitable for parent trusts, board of trustee members, principals, teachers, parents/whānau, in fact anyone who is interested in learning about the primary aged child whether you are a Montessori parent or not.

Workshop Topics and Outline

Workshop 1 : Adaptability and the Human Tendencies

This workshop will discuss some key principles that underpin all of Montessori’s work. Principles which are common to all people, all around the world and right throughout their lives and have allowed human beings to survive and thrive in all continents of the world, and maybe soon, beyond.

Workshop 2: Planes of Development and The Characteristics of the Primary Aged Child

This workshop will look at tamariki as they move from infancy through to adulthood and the changes we can expect at each level. While we will look at the characteristics of children at each plane of development, we will look particularly closely at the characteristics of the primary child. What is it that is particular to this age group and therefore how do we cater to them specifically as a parent and educator?

Workshop 3: Cosmic Education

Cosmic Education is the curriculum offered in the primary class. What precedes it and how does that lay the foundation for what comes next, and how does it in turn lay the foundations for what comes after that? What is it, what does it involve, how is it different from what we had when we were at school, and, as it was first proposed nearly 100 years ago, how is it still relevant today?

Workshop 4: The Prepared Adult

How do we (the parent, board member, trust member, principal, teacher) prepare ourselves….  How does that change as our child moves through each plane of development? How do we prepare ourselves and what sort of environment should we provide for our tamariki. How should we interact with them if we want the best outcomes for each and every one?
